Our Story
In August of 1982, Guernsey Memorial Hospital Administrators permitted a social worker to begin an in-depth study of the hospice concept of care. By September, they funded a group of nurses, administrators, clergy, and an attorney to attend the Ohio Hospice Organization workshop focused on the development of a small, rural hospice. Realizing an integrated complex, quality hospice program would require board and community support, the group held three community meetings to help create public awareness. By January of 1984, enough people showed interest in further exploring the development of a local hospice.
On March 12, 1984, Hospice of Guernsey became incorporated. After a year of trainings, fundraising, licensure, and certifications, our first patient was admitted on February 6, 1985. Since that day, we have provided quality, compassionate care to thousands of terminally ill patients in Guernsey, Noble and western Belmont counties. Our care permits patients to stay in their home, wherever that may be, surrounded by family and friends.
Hospice of Guernsey, Inc. employs more than 25 staff member and is proud to have over 50 dedicated volunteers. We are Medicare and Medicaid certified and licensed by the Ohio Department of Health. As members of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and other various healthcare groups, we work hard to ensure that quality hospice care will be available for our area for years to come.
